Are my students listening?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Following&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mrbartonmaths.com\/blog\/170-how-to-secure-100-student-engagement-with-pritesh-raichura\/\">my conversation with Pritesh Raichura<\/a>, I am obsessed with whether students are listening. For years, my assumption had been:&nbsp;<em>of course they are!<\/em>&nbsp;After all, I had a room full of quiet, smiling, apparently attentive students. But it was only when I started checking whether students had listened to the instructions or explanation I had just given (\u201cAdam, what is the first step in the process that I just explained?\u201d), I realised this was a dodgy assumption. I relied on&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eedi.substack.com\/p\/poor-proxies-for-listening\">poor proxies for listening<\/a>. What is our evidence that students have listened to what we or another student just said?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"2-2-do-my-students-understand\">2. Do my students understand?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Once we have established that our students are listening, the next question to ask is whether anything we or another student is saying makes sense. There are many&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eedi.substack.com\/p\/poor-proxies-for-understanding\">poor proxies for understanding<\/a>, such as one student&#8217;s response, a room full of nods, or nobody asking questions. But what is the evidence that our students really understand?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"3-3-will-my-students-remember\">3. Will my students remember?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\"><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Students have listened and understood. In the moment, everything is going great. But will they remember this tomorrow? Or next week? Or next term? We can hope they will. We can assume they will. But where is our evidence?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"4-the-imaginary-coach\">The imaginary coach<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">To help us answer these questions, we can imagine a coach in our classroom adopting the Hypothesis Model. Every time we give an instruction or explanation or another student speaks, the imaginary coach\u2019s hypothesis is that our students are either not listening, do not understand, or will not remember. So, our job is to provide the critical evidence to test and &#8211; hopefully! &#8211; refute that hypothesis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Are my students listening?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Our critical evidence could be&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tipsforteachers.substack.com\/p\/tips-for-teachers-newsletter-4\">Cold Calling<\/a>&nbsp;a student and getting them to repeat back what we or another student has said. Or we could strive for mass participation by using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tipsforteachers.substack.com\/p\/tips-for-teachers-newsletter-34\">Call and Respond<\/a>. These checks for listening need to be done regularly enough, and the consequences of not listening need to be sufficiently severe, to ensure that the norm in the classroom becomes: we listen hard at all times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"2\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Do my students understand?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">Critical evidence could be in the form of Cold Calling one student, but far more reliable is a whole-class check for understanding.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tipsforteachers.co.uk\/mini-whiteboards-top-5\/\">Mini-whiteboards<\/a>&nbsp;are often my go-to in a maths lesson, but using&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/tipsforteachers.substack.com\/p\/tips-for-teachers-newsletter-24\">ABCD cards<\/a>&nbsp;in response to a well-chosen multiple-choice diagnostic question can be an effective way in any subject to see who understands and who does not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol start=\"3\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li class=\"\"><strong>Will my students remember?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"\">The thing to avoid here is assuming that just because students could do something at the time, they will always be able to do it. This is the distinction between&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/mrbartonmaths.com\/resourcesnew\/8.%20Research\/Memory%20and%20Revision\/An%20integrated%20review%20-%20Learning%20v%20Performance.pdf\">performance and learning<\/a>. Critical evidence here is in the form of carefully considered&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/eedi.substack.com\/p\/four-retreival-opportunities\">retrieval opportunities<\/a>.
